INTRODUCTION OF JINNAH HYDROPWOER PROJECT ON EPC/TURNKEY BASIS


GENERAL

JINNAH HYDROPOWER PROJECT (96 MW) IS BEING CONSTRUCTED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE JINNAH BARRAGE ON THE INDUS RIVER ABOUT 5 KM DOWNSTREAM OF KALABAGH TOWN DISTRICT MIANWALI, 234 KM FROM ISLAMABAD. THE BARRAGE WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1945 AS A COMPONENT OF THE THAL IRRIGATION PROJECT. IT WAS BUILT TO RAISE THE WATER LEVEL OF THE INDUS RIVER TO SUPPLY IT TO THE THAL CANAL, WHICH IRRIGATES SOME 800,000 HECTARES OF LAND BETWEEN THE INDUS RIVER AND THE JHELUM RIVER.


JINNAH HYDROPOWER PROJECT WILL GENERATE 96 MW OF POWER UNDER A HEAD OF 4.7 M UTILIZING DISCHARGE OF 2800 M3 /SEC. THE PROJECT WILL PRODUCE ANNUALLY 688 MILLION KWH OF ENERGY.  INAUGURATION OF JINNAH HYDROPOWER   PROJECT BY THE HONOURABLE PRIME MINISTER OF PAKISTAN SHOUKAT AZIZ ON 23-12-2006, THE PROJECT HAS BEEN ENTERED INTO CONSTRUCTION STAGE. THE PROJECT WILL BE COMPLETED IN 48 MONTHS AT A COST OF US$ 128 MILLIONS FROM THE DATE OF COMMENCEMENT.

JHPP IS PROPOSED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF JINNAH BARRAGE. THE HEADRACE WILL OFF-TAKE FROM RIGHT GUIDE BANK ABOUT 1300 M UPSTREAM OF JINNAH BARRAGE. IT HAS CURVED ALIGNMENT OF 500 M AND THEN A STRAIGHT PORTION OF ABOUT 800 M UPSTREAM OF PROPOSED POWERHOUSE. IT WILL BE CONNECTED TO 132 KV DAUD KHEL GRID STATION 5 KM AWAY FROM THE PROJECT.


THE DESIGN DISCHARGE OF THE POWER CHANNEL IS 2800 M3/S. THE BED WIDTH IS 133 M. THE MAXIMUM POND LEVEL IS 211.50 M.A.S.L (METER ABOVE SEA LEVEL). THE TOP OF EMBANKMENT IS 215 M.A.S.L. THE BED LEVEL FOR THE HEADRACE CHANNEL IS AT 202.50 M.A.S.L. THE POWERHOUSE CONSISTS OF 4 TURBINE BLOCKS AND ONE SERVICE BAY ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE POWERSIDE.

CONTRACTOR OF JINNAH HYDROPOWER PROJECT


M/S DONGFANG ELECTRIC CORPORATION (DEC) OF CHINA IS THE PROJECT CONTRACTOR.


SUPER FLOOD  2010

OVERALL PHYSICAL PROGRESS OF JINNAH HYDROPOWER PROJECT WAS 94.40% AS ON JUNE 2010. IT WAS REDUCED TO 77.7% DUE TO DEVASTATING SUPER FLOOD OCCURRED IN THE PROJECT ARE DURING JULY – AUGUST, 2010. NOW, AFTER RESUMPTION OF WORK, THE OVERALL PHYSICAL PROGRESS IS 85% AS ON JUNE 30, 2011. FIRST UNIT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMMISSIONED IN DECEMBER, 2011 AND ALL THE EIGHT UNITS WILL BE COMPLETED UPTO DECEMBER, 2012. AT THIS STAGE 01 NO. UNIT IS RUNNING AND GENERATING 12 MW FOR NATIONAL GRID SYSTEM.

NEED OF THE PROJECT

THE EVER-GROWING ENERGY REQUIREMENTS IN PAKISTAN NEED TO BE MET IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE FURTHER ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATION. IN THE PAST MOST OF THE ENERGY DEMANDS HAVE BEEN MET THROUGH THERMAL POWER PROJECTS. ALTHOUGH THERMAL PROJECTS DO OFFER BENEFITS, SUCH A SHORT OF TIME FOR COMPLETION OF PROJECT DEPENDING ON FOSSIL FUEL WHICH IS MOSTLY IMPORTED AND PUT ADDITIONAL PRESSURE ON FOREIGN EXCHANGE REQUIREMENT.

FOR FUTURE REQUIREMENT, HOWEVER, THE OBJECTIVE IS TO FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOMESTIC RESOURCES, IN PARTICULAR THE COUNTRY’S HUGE HYDROPOWER POTENTIAL. ON A LONG TERM BASIS, SUCH HYDROPOWER POTENTIAL CAN BE EXPLOITED AND UTILIZED TO ENHANCE THE NATION’S POWER CAPABILITIES AT MUCH LOWER COSTS.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW HEAD HYDROPOWER PROJECTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ON TOP PRIORITY, AS THEY GENERALLY OFFER ADVANTAGES SUCH AS BEING FREE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS AND RELATIVE EASE TO DEVELOP.
