Isa Khel Tehsil Unions
Isa Khel (عیِسیٰ خیل) is a tehsil (administrative subdivision) of Mianwali District in Punjab, Pakistan. The tehsil headquarters is the town of Isa Khel. Geographically it lies on the western edge of Mianwali District along the Indus and at the foot of the Khattak / Chichali–Maidani hill fringe — a landscape that historically connected it more to the north-west frontier than central Punjab. As of recent government summaries and compiled estimates the tehsil area is large (around 1,700–1,860 km² in different sources) and its population (rural + urban combined) is on the order of several hundred thousand; urban share is ~22–23% while rural is ~77–78%.
Administrative Structure (Municipal Committees & Union Councils)
Administratively Isa Khel Tehsil is subdivided into 3 Municipal Committees and 13 Union Councils (count and names below reflect authoritative public records and district listings; local portals sometimes publish slightly different spellings or additional village lists):
Municipal Committees:
MC Isa Khel (town).
MC Kamar Mushani (also spelled Kamar Mushani Pakka / Kamar Mushani Pakka).
MC Kala bagh (Kala Bagh) — an important river/river-bank town in the tehsil.
Union Councils (common listing from government/district & local compilations):
Chapri.
Khaglan Wala (Khaglanwala).
Kaloaan Wala (Kallooan/Kaloan variants appear locally).
Kallur Shareef (Kallur / Kallur Shareef).
Kamar Mushani (Pakka and Pakka/Urban entries appear both as MC and UC in some lists).
Kot Chandna (river/transport node on Indus road).
Manda Khel.
Mianwali.org
Sultan Khel (a named tribal/union area).
Tabisar (Tabi Sar) — listed as a town & UC in local portals.
Tanikhel (Tani Khel / Tani Khail variants).
Tola Bhangi Khel (Tola Bhangi Khel).
Trag (Trag / small market town & UC).
Vanjari.
Note: different local lists (e.g., district PDFs, ECP or older gazetteers) sometimes list slight name-variations or different spellings — this is common for rural Punjab where transliteration and local usage vary. Where possible I cross-checked government (district / LGCD), PBS/census data, and reputable local portals.
Major towns and notable villages
The tehsil includes several important towns and many villages. The most notable towns (administrative / historical / economic roles) are:
Isakhel (town) — tehsil headquarters, historic market, tribal/Khans’ seat. Municipality created under British era (municipal records exist from late 19th century). Population of town varies by source (recent municipal population ~94–100k in district rollups for the urban area across the tehsil).
Kamar Mushani (Kamar Mushani Pakka / Paka Kamar Mushani) — town and municipal center with its own UC; important local market/hub.
Kalabagh (Kala Bagh) — historic town on the Indus; important for river-side transport and local agriculture; also known for the Kalabagh area (and the dam debates historically).
Kot Chandna — river crossing/settlement on Indus; local trade and ferry/bridge routes.
Smaller but locally significant places (examples drawn from UC lists, local site articles and district notes):
Chapri, Tabisar (Tabi Sar), Sultan Khel, Trag, Vanjari, Tani Khel, Manda Khel, Khaglan Wala and various mohallas inside Isakhel town (Bumbran Wala, Alam Khel, Mumo Khel, etc. noted by local histories). These villages and mohallah-names are frequently recorded on the Mianwali community portal and older gazetteers.
Demography & languages
Isakhel Tehsil is predominantly rural; the tehsil contains a majority of Punjabi/Saraiki speakers with a very significant Pashto (Pashto/Niazi) speaking population — Isakhel is often noted as one of Punjab’s tehsils with the largest proportion of Pashto speakers due to its Niazi/Pashtun tribal presence and history. Census tables and district profiles show the rural-dominant population share. For detailed demographic tables, see the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics district/tehsil breakdowns.
Short history & administrative changes
Under British rule Isakhel was previously associated with Bannu District; when the North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) was created in 1901, Bannu became part of NWFP but Isakhel tehsil remained in Punjab and was merged into Mianwali District. Imperial gazetteers and district history pages record these administrative changes. The tehsil’s name comes from the Isa Khel (Niazi) tribal grouping.
Economy & land use
The tehsil economy is principally agricultural (irrigated and rain-fed tracts), with riverine zones near Indus focusing on crops reliant on river irrigation. Local markets in Isakhel, Kamar Mushani and Kalabagh support trade in agricultural goods, livestock and basic services. Historical land-holding patterns included large Khan-owned estates (noted in colonial and post-colonial records); land reforms in the 1960s reduced large estate holdings.
Local administration & civic services (what exists / where to look)
Tehsil offices (Tehsil Municipal Administration / Tehsil Council) are based in Isakhel town; municipal service details, council member lists and some administrative PDFs are published through Punjab local government portals (LGCD / district pages). For planning, revenue, and UC-level contacts check the Punjab LG&CD / Mianwali district pages.
